The Forest Schools Approach
Casa Montessori has a large enclosed garden with mature trees and covered areas, and natural elements to encourage physical play and creative fun. All children spend a significant portion of their day in the garden play, loose parts, socio-dramatic play, and taking care of the garden and plants.
Our garden is an extension of the classroom, providing experiences that can be further enhanced with work in the classroom, making children’s learning coherent and meaningful.
Open-ended creative and sensory pursuits build children’s language and social skills while the Forest Schools risk-benefit approach develops children’s attention, coordination and problem-solving skills. Whether tending to the garden, adapting to the weather, or engaging in practical activities outdoors, the children develop self-awareness and respect for all living things.
Our Casa
Both are mixed-age groups to allow peer learning, empathy, and kindness to grow.
Nido
6 months – 3 years old
We offer a Nido (“nest”) responding to the distinct characteristics of children under 3.
Casa
3-6 years old
The Casa (“children’s house”) caters for children from age 3 until they go to school.
Our principles and approach
The early years are a two-fold stage of rapid growth and skill acquisition followed by integration and refinement of skills, language and concepts, and self-regulation. Our Nido and Casa environments are fine tuned to support children as they grow and change. Both are mixed-age groups to allow peer learning, empathy, and kindness to grow.
The Nido
Responding to the distinct characteristics of the child under three, we offer a Nido (nest) for babies from 6 months to three years old. Babies and toddlers are cared for in separate small groups that interact with each other for periods of time.
In the Nido, children’s development centres on their physical, language and emotional self-regulation and is also where feeding, sleeping and toilet learning are established. Our specially trained Montessori infant-toddler educators will support you and your child throughout this stage of rapid change and growth.
The Casa preschool
At age three, children are capable of basic self-care, keen to socialise, and full of curiosity about the world. By harnessing these overriding tendencies we motivate children to diversify and refine their physical, language and cognitive skills, and gain the necessary dispositions for making friends and working well with others.
In multi-age groups our three to six year olds mix, in turn relying on and supporting each other. The three-year span of our Montessori preschool provides the ideal opportunity for children to experience an early childhood that is fun, unhurried and self-directed, as it naturally should be.
The Additional Year
If your child is eligible for an additional year of Early Learning and Childcare (“deferral”), they can attend Casa until the age of six and fully benefit from the Montessori approach during their most formative years.
Our Classrooms
Our classrooms are designed to be calm, inviting, and purposefully arranged to encourage autonomy and concentration. Low shelves offer attractive, hands-on educational materials that allow children to learn through their self-directed play.
Spaces are organised into distinct areas for practical life, sensorial exploration, mathematics, language, and cultural studies, each equipped with the full range of Montessori materials as well as activities that respond to children’s topical interests. Natural light, neutral tones, and uncluttered spaces create a sense of peace and order, helping the children focus and feel at home.
A Day At Casa …
8-9 am
We have a relaxed arrival window between 8 am and 9 am, with healthy breakfast choices available as children arrive and settle in.
9am – 12pm
Children enjoy an uninterrupted Montessori work period, choosing from a range of learning-rich options indoors or outdoors, including a hands-on and social snack. On some days, children venture out to Forest Kindergarten or on outings such as the library, the local park, or museums.
12pm – 1pm
At lunch time the children help to set the table for lunch, serving themselves and clearing up as far as they are able. Guides eat with them and serve as role models.
1PM – 3PM
Mid-afternoon, children may have a nap or rest or enjoy free play either indoors or outdoors. Group activities such as cooking, science experiments, art, yoga, or singing may be offered in line with children’s own learning interests. ArtBuds is a staple offering that all preschool children can join.
3pm – 5.30pm
At the end of the day, the children have tea together, followed by outdoor play and calm activities until they go home.
